DESIGN YEARS 2021-2024 COMPLETION YEAR 2024

Axelrad is a beer garden, performance and event space located on the corner of Alabama Street and Alameda Street in Houston's Midtown neighborhood. Axelrad originally opened in 2016, including a ground floor interior bar within an existing 1940s masonry building, and a large exterior beer garden.

Ben Rosenblum Studio was the architect and designer of the exterior expansion that we as completed over the last two years, including the new ground floor exterior bar and addition of the 2nd floor patio and adjacent shade structure. The exterior bar and addition provide further access to drinks for customers, additional server infrastructure including a new walk-in cooler, and additional ground floor and 2nd floor exterior shaded seating areas.

The design introduces a modern plaster and concrete ground floor volume that includes the bar, new walk in cooler, and new restrooms and storage, and is meant to bring a simple modern aesthetic to the side of the existing masonry building while blending in with existing conditions including the existing metal structure. The bar includes automated hydraulic upward folding glazed steel doors. The steel 2nd floor patio expansion includes a new exterior stair, seating, new guard rail with drink rail, and corrugated metal roof shade structure. The adjacent shade structure includes additional seating and event space.
